Comment on the blog on Abortion

The blog on abortion has a good argument as to why abortion is wrong, but however does not just come to the conclusion that abortion is wrong it has a link in which before hand says decide for yourself if you think this is right or wrong 'decide for yourself'. This is a good way to approach this subject as the opininon of whether abortion is right or wrong can only come from ones own opinion, some may believe its ok and others may say its always wrong. The graphic picture was a good choice for the way she used it to explain abortion is murder because after looking at that picture what else can it be seen as. Overall this blog is good by how it leaves the option of whether abortion is right or wrong down to the indivdual.

Summary of the module

I am a 19 year old girl studying Philisophy and Religious Studies. Being bad relates to some parts of my philisophy modules. In the way that some of the being bad subjects we have looked at are included within some of the philisophers we have covered. I have found this module to an appropriate level. I think the modules that we studied were appropriate to this module and there were not any other subjects that i can think of that i would have liked included in the module. The format of the lectures did work well and the module team were good at presenting there subject areas in the module. The lectures were good with the group discussions as little groups and as a whole lecture group. The way in which thw lectures used a variety of other topics was usefull in the module. I am going to be doing PH2004 ‘It Shouldn’t Be Allowed’ at level 2 an i would recomment being bad to a friend as it was an enjoyable module. The blogs work well as an assessment and the other format of assesment also worked well. I have learnt a lot more about other people opinions on certain subjects and have found the module usefull as it uses a lot of sources from various books, the internet, films etc... Overall the module was good and the lectures and topucs used within the module worked well.

Comment on Heebs With Wings blog about tattoos.

Heebs blog about tattoos includes a lot of detail as to why people get tattoos done which is an appealing fact to know as to why people actually want them done in the first place. It is also fascinating to know that there are a lot of people who regret having tattoos especially of peoples names, like the one mentioned in the blog from the newspaper article. However this blog could be improved with an explanation as to what peoples thoughts are on tattoos e.g. are they seen as good or bad?

Lies

Lying can be either seen as a bad thing to do, a good thing to do or both good or bad depending on the circumstances. If we went by Kants example we would 'Act so that the maxim of thy will can always at the same time hold good as a principle of universal legislation.' (http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/ethics/lying/lying_3.shtml). In other words if we all told lies would it be a good thing or bad, well if everybody lied this would not be a good thing for socitey therefore Kant would say we should not lie at all. Utilitarism would also disagree with lying because it doesn bring about the maxiumum happiness for the maxiumum number. Therefore in these cases lying would be seen as a bad thing. However there are those who think some lies can be acceptable e.g. white lies, were one lies so as not to upset someone i.e. when a frineds top is ugly and one lies and says its lovely so as not to hurt there feelings. St.Augstine also believes that some lies are acceptable and also some occasions when lying can be seen as right.
People lie for different reasons, some lie so they dont hurt someones feelings or maybe even to protect someone, some lie to cover there backs so to speak and some people lie to be horrible and malicious. So it can be seen in some circumstanses that lying is alright but some believe lying is always wrong.

Drugs

Illegal drugs such as ecstacy, weed etc... Are harmfull to ones health and also to others. Those who use needles are putting themselves at risks of spreading STD's like HIV threw using dirty needles. The use of drugs to most are seen as a 'bad' thing to do as they do not bring any other benefits other than self indulging, addictivness, bad behaviour (in most cases e.g. gettin 'high) and stealing or begging to get money for the drugs. Drugs can cause very nasty side affects some of which can lead to crimes such a murder just so they can get drugs. The use of drugs can also cause mental health problems such as schizophrenia, which again can lead to murder as this mental health problem causes inidivduals to believe that there is a voice in there head telling them to do so. Drugs can also kill an indivudual instantly, therefore the question has to be asked why take drugs at all drug users are mostly seen as 'bad' people, people who are an outcast in society and also a lot turn out to be criminals threw drug abuse. Therefore drug abuse is 'bad', it leads to 'bad' behaviour health problems and also criminal actions.

Kids

Kids is a movie released in 1995 about sex, rape and sexualy transmited dieseases (STD's). This film portrayes the issues in this in a realistic way. The film addresses issues that teenagers should be thinking about e.g. a girl in the film had sex with one boy who had HIV she then became affected because they had not used a condom. This film addresses sex in a serious way, that sex is not always a good thing in different circumstances. Sleeping around can lead to STD's and is not something to be proud off, this is an issue in which most religions would consider as an immoral thing to do and a lot of people in society will also hold the same view. Rape is also another issue that is used in this film, this is certainly a 'bad' thing to do, one of the worst things in this film is that there were children in the room when the girl got raped ( rape is when a sexual act is perrformed without the permission of the other person who is involved) as she was sleeping when this happened. Rape also can spread STD's and this is an important issue to be aware of. The act of sex which some believe is that sex should only be beetween two people who love each other instead of meanigless one night stands which include no love just lust. This lust in a lot of religions is an immoral action, lust of which is one of the seven deadly sins.

Tattoos

Tattoos are permanent 'drawings' on the body. Peoples attitudes towards tattoos have changed in time, in the past tattoos carried a stigma with them. They were seen as horrible and only for thugs. However these days tattoos are doen for many reasons to mark a special time in ones life, for decoration, for attractiveness and also for acceptance into certain groups. There all types of people that have tattoos and now there is not such a stigma about them e.g. people who have them are not seen as thugs. However a tattoo is a big thing to have done on ones body as they are expensive, they hurt, they are permanent and too remove them by laser is very costly and more painfull than the actuall tattoo itself. These are the main thoughts about having a tattoo done instead of thoughts like, is a tattoo bad, will i look like a thug etc... These are the types of thoughts people may have had in the past. However soem of these thoughts still exist especially in some religions were tattoos are throwned upon and are seen as bad e.g. in christianity the body is meant to be seen as ones temple and therefore some say tattoos are like graffiti, that they are wrong and cheap looking. However tattoos are seen differently by different people e.g. some may find them wrong, ugly etc... The choice of having a tattoo done is down to the individual.

being too religious

Being too religious is an individual who is involved highly with religious practises and sometimes individuals who are over the top with quotes from their religious text/s to try and convert people, this happens a lot in christianity. Being too religious can make people fell uncomfrotable and sometimes feel as if there comfort zone is been invaded e.g. when Jehovahs witnesses come knocking on the door trying to convert you. However the question is when does one become too religious? Is it when an individual is screaming in the middle of town about Jesus coming agian. or wearing religious robes e.g. if your a vicar or nun etc... Or is it when an individual goes to their 'church' everyday or like nuns and monks live their religion everyday. The answer to this is down to the individual, some people may find preaching about religion as too religious and yet think that monks and nuns are not too religious. This is just a matter of opinion to the individual. The other question is, is being too religious acceptable? This again is down to the opinion of the individual, it maybe some take no notice of people who are too religious and there may be some people who do not accept people who are too religious as they find them over the top and are uncomfortable around them. So in conclusion it is down to the opinion of each indvidual as to what they believe about people who are too religious.

Bad Comedians

Bad comedians , are comedians that use racist jokes or sterotypes of people to make their audience laugh. They think that these jokes are funny and so can be seen as racist even if they are not. These types of jokes do not usualy make the audience laugh but rather cringe unless they have a bad sense of humour or are racist themselves. However there are those people who believe that jokes do not contain an expression of an opinon and so is unlike racism or sexism. As there are also comedians who use sexist jokes to make their audience laugh and again as with racism a lot of people do take offence at these types of jokes some of which can lead to court cases. These types of racist or sexist jokes can be seen as cheap and nasty rather than funny e.g. some jokes can be made about 'fat' people these jokes can cause upset in those who are'fat', these jokes are then turned into hurtfull comments to the indivdual rather than humour.

Here is a link about people who find these types of bad comedians 'cheap':

Masturbation

Masturbation can be seen as an act of 'self-love' or 'self-abuse' . In earlier society masturabtion was seen as an immoral act. It was not a topic to be talked about amongst anyone. However in todays society does not carry the stigma of been 'dirty' or immoral. It is an act that today can be talked about openly with friends especially amoung men, women are less open about this topic. However there are some members in society that may find it 'dirty' or immoral as well as some religions that may hold this view. 'masturbation is not a sin in itself. The Bible doesn't say anything on the issue of masturbation. It only speaks to the sin of improper lust. So wrong desires are the sin, not masturbation. ' (http://www.new-life.net/mastrbte.htm). Therefore although socitey s more open about masturbation, it is not atopic that most people would want to talk about as there is still a little of that stigma that it is dirty and immoral in especially in certain religions.

Infidelity

Infidelity can have different meanings to different people, to some it may mean cheating on a partner by having sexual intercourse with someone else, to others it may mean cheating on someone by just kissing someone else or even just flirting with someone else. There are a lot of types of ‘being bad’ involved in infertility lying, selfishness, scheming and ‘stabbing people in the back’. Infidelity can lead to a lot of heartache marriages break down and if there are children involved it can mess up their lives too, couples break up and all around it causes a lot sadness rather than any happiness or satisfaction. There are different excuses people make when defending themselves to try and make themselves the victim rather than the victimiser. Infidelity only hurts others and includes nothing only the actions of ‘being bad’.

Here is a useful link for those who have either committed infidelity or have been the victim of it: http://infidelity.com/

Smoking

Smoking has serious consequences in terms of individual’s health, there are plenty of adverts on television and in magazines that tell you smoking will kill you it can give you lung cancer, throat cancer and other health problems, yet so many people still smoke. Despite the numerous advertisements, campaigns and the recent smoking ban in public places people still smoke. There could be a range of reasons including impressing peers or lovers, to look attractive and cool, some of this maybe influenced by the media e.g. in grease Sandy uses a cigarette to look attractive and seductive. The issues of health and also of money (as smoking costs a lot of money especially if you are a heavy smoker) do not seem to put people off smoking, it maybe that the cigarette gives opportunity for socialising and meeting new people, for example, somebody asks for lighter off another individual and then finds themselves in conversation. Smoking may also be a way of helping when an individual is stressed even though facts point out that smoking makes stress and anxiety worse. So is smoking considered bad, in the ways of health and money and the ways in which smoking causes a high rate of deaths therefore increasing the amount the NHS has to pay for helping those with health issues related to smoking, then yes I would say smoking is bad it causes a lot of problems that can be avoided.
