Smoking has serious consequences in terms of individual’s health, there are plenty of adverts on television and in magazines that tell you smoking will kill you it can give you lung cancer, throat cancer and other health problems, yet so many people still smoke. Despite the numerous advertisements, campaigns and the recent smoking ban in public places people still smoke. There could be a range of reasons including impressing peers or lovers, to look attractive and cool, some of this maybe influenced by the media e.g. in grease Sandy uses a cigarette to look attractive and seductive. The issues of health and also of money (as smoking costs a lot of money especially if you are a heavy smoker) do not seem to put people off smoking, it maybe that the cigarette gives opportunity for socialising and meeting new people, for example, somebody asks for lighter off another individual and then finds themselves in conversation. Smoking may also be a way of helping when an individual is stressed even though facts point out that smoking makes stress and anxiety worse. So is smoking considered bad, in the ways of health and money and the ways in which smoking causes a high rate of deaths therefore increasing the amount the NHS has to pay for helping those with health issues related to smoking, then yes I would say smoking is bad it causes a lot of problems that can be avoided.
